Stories From the “Record of Ye Old Burying Ground”

Page 1 of a photocopy of the record

A few years ago, a friend of the RMBGRC named Lou Spagnola brought me a copy of a document that he found in the archives of Revere City Hall: “Record of Ye Old Burying Ground Revere, Mass.” As I flipped through it, I saw names that I recognized from the gravestones, and many names that I did not recognize from the gravestones. I realized that this document meant that there were potentially hundreds more people buried in RMBG than we thought there were.

I’ve been working through this document for a while now in order to find out what these people had in common and how they ended up in unmarked graves. I’ve added many of them to Find-a-Grave and helped at least one person (so far) confirm that their ancestor is in fact buried in RMBG. The full story of this document and how it has changed what we thought we knew about RMBG is in the works, but interesting side stories keep popping up along the way and I want to share those as well. You can use the links here or use the drop-down menu above to learn more about these people, some of whom would have been completely lost to history without the discovery of this document.
